In the end, John Almanzar was sitting behind a mountain of chips -- more than 10 million. His win was good for $43,003 and his first Borgata Open trophy. He came close during the 2011 Borgata Fall Poker Open when he finished 2nd in the $250 Big Stack NLH event for $10,283.
Hem Prasad waited patiently while Almanzar and third place finisher Jack Rapoport carved up the final table. When the two big stacks clashed, resulting in Rapoport busting third for $15,553, Prasad slid into a second place finish, good for $24,193.
This one day event drew 509 entrants for total buy-ins of $178,150, cruising past the $100,000 guarantee. The final 54 players earned a cut.
Almanzar almost busted out early in the day when he got all-in with pocket sixes, but ran into pocket Tens. He rivered a straight to survive that all-in. "No Aces, No Kings" he said, claiming he got no big pairs all day. He still managed to survive, outlasting the field of 509 players. John is a paralegal and has to get back to work, so we won't be seeing him in the main event.
