Event 16 Recap

$500 + $60 Pot Limit Omaha H/L 8B (Re-Entry)

"I don't play Omaha" said Frank Athey, after winning $8,827 and his first Borgata Open title.  He's used to the limit version of the game and this was his first ever pot limit Omaha high/low tournament.  "I like it because you can push people off hands...you can't do that in limit".

Bruce Frank was runner-up in this event, finishing second for $4,792.  The semi-professional poker player plays quite a lot of pot limit Omaha and No Limit Hold'em.  He has about a dozen cashes here at Borgata and five of those are final tables.  He sure knows how to play a short stack.  At one point Frank was all-in for the 5k small blind during level 18 (blinds 5k/10k) with six players remaining.  He parlayed that single gray chip all the way to a second place finish.

Fifty-two entrants provided for total buy-ins of $31,200.  The final nine earned a cut.  Among those were two legends in the poker world.  Miami John Cernuto, who holds three WSOP bracelets and over $5 million in tournament earnings, finished 7th for $1,261.  Chris Reslock, who has one WSOP bracelet, a WSOP Circuit Championship, and about $1.8 million in tournament earnings, finished 9th for $757.

Another player hoping to make history here tonight was Yuebin Guo.  He is one of only a handful of players who have three Borgata Open Series titles and is trying to tie Will Failla's solo accomplishment with four.   Today he came up short, finishing 6th for $1,513.

Frank Athey has several businesses, but tries to get to Borgata about three times a year to play tournaments.  He's making the most of this trip to Borgata, playing another one day event later today, then he'll be playing the Championship event on Sunday.  Although he spends a month or more in Las Vegas every year during the WSOP, Athey said "Borgata is the best on the east coast".
